Detroit Soup Kitchen Feeds the body and soul

Like any other community in the United States, Detroit experienced devastating poverty during the Great Depression 1929. It was during this time that the poor of the city came to play at St. Bonaventure Monastery in Mt. Elliot Street, home of the Capuchin Order. Casey urged Fray Solano in order to feed the hungry with soup and sandwiches. Finally, the lines grew to more than 2,000 people waiting for their only meal of the day. The brothers knew they had to do more.

The monks went to the men and women of the Secular Franciscans and joined with them to collect food from farms, make the soup, bread, cakes, and serving meals in the room next to the monastery. From these beginnings grew the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.

Today, the kitchen Capuchin Soup serves the poor who suffer from the lack of basic human needs: material needs, such as food, clothing and household needs, psychological needs, such as motivation, self esteem, and rehabilitation, and social needs, such as support systems and meaningful relationships.

The scope provides a variety of services including 2,000 hot meals served at two locations, the distribution of approximately 30,000 garments to customers, showers and a change of clothes for a maximum of 30 homeless and poorly housed people on a daily basis, a library of children and the study of art therapy, and 25,000 square feet the urban farm project, to name a few. To serve as a positive healing force in people's minds and lives of needy people, the soup kitchen Capuchin strives to promote the development, guidance and material assistance to promote healthy growth and independence.

Because the monks unwavering commitment to its mission and dedication of volunteers and donors, the Capuchin soup kitchen spent a record 87 percent of every dollar on direct client services.

One of the fundraising events more successfully for the dining room, the annual dinner SOCK (Support Our Capuchin Kitchen) has grown one of the most successful fundraisers in Michigan. It was listed in Crain's Detroit Business as one of the major fundraisers Detroit extrapolation.

SOCK first originated in 1942. Billed as the "Men's Only" dinner Baseball, more than 100 men showed up for the event was held at the old Soup Kitchen building on the mountain. Elliot Street. Each attendee paid five dollars and heard about Connie Mack baseball. During the remarkable as Ted Williams, Casey Stengel, Mickey Mantle, Joe Garagiola and came to the meeting to talk about baseball.

Now the event includes a cocktail reception, auction silent, dinner and entertainment. Mr. Jim Harper, long-time follower of the radio host and morning show, has served as Master of Ceremonies for many years. Although the format has changed, one thing remains the same: help the less fortunate in the community, Metro Detroit still dedicated to assisting and supporting this annual event Soup Kitchen.
